Mirror, mirror on the wall, which is the best gogy of them all?
As a dental student in India, I would certainly agree that the pedagogy was appropriate because I was a dentist at the age of 22! When I started dental school again at University of Michigan, I was married and an adult learner. The pre-clinical courses were not exciting because I was eager to get to clinic! The curriculum was not designed to fit my unique needs as a foreign trained dentist. This underscores the importance of relevance and the need for immediate application, as an adult learner. As a student, I was definitely on the Converging & Accommodating Learning style category by Kolb. I loved to "do" things first and then reflect on my experience. The "Disorienting Dilemma" as the first phase of transformative learning was obvious in my new learning environment, but the next several phases were missing and it took me longer to re-integrate the new concepts. I wish I had known about the Transformative Learning Theory by Mezirow then! As a student in this Masters' program, I am leaning more towards Heutagogy: The art of self-determined learning, coined by Stewart Hase and Chris Kenyon. While Andragogy is about self-directed learning with the teacher facilitating the learning, Heutagogy is aligned with the modern, online learning that equips the learner to dive deeper and be in charge of their own learning. It is learner centric and allows for flexibility with very little instructor guidance. I plan on using the androgogies in my second year seminar course by increasing the chances for reflective exercises and would like to design a module for interprofessional experiences for senior dental, nursing and pharmacy students on the heutagogical principles. Wish me luck!
