My bytes for this week
Learning Theories and dental education: The Social Cognitive Theory is described as the interaction between personal beliefs, behavior and the environment. Since you can control the teaching environment, you could instill values and expectancies regarding knowledge, skills and behaviors required to attain a certain competency. Since the personal beliefs depend on self-efficacy & self regulation which are related, it is worthwhile to consider this as you develop pedagogies for a first- year, second-year or a third-year dental student. Reinforcements will affect the performance. Modeling: Cognitive modeling could be utilized to teach critical thinking for students. By explaining your thought process to troubleshoot a clinical problem and arrive at a diagnosis, you will be able to "model" the critical thinking. Observational learning could be used to teach soft skills like communication with an angry patient. As a student advisor, it is important to understand the Social Cognitive Theory, modeling and self-efficacy to guide your student to achieve their goals. By asking them to set their own goals and helping them attain them helps increase their confidence, self-efficacy and motivation.
