![]() Who doesn't love a good game? What if we played everyday in class and the students loved it? Using technology has become trendy for higher education and educators in dental schools have incorporated many different types of technology to teach various disciplines. Gamification is the application of gaming elements to increase engagement of the participants. Gaming elements include leaderboards, scores, graffiti, badges, medals etc. Usually, gamification includes a timed play, and the game is fast paced. The leader is the fastest one with the correct answer. Game-based learning teaches content through the game and is carefully designed to capture all the nuances of the knowledge/ skills or behaviors that is expected to be learned. The neuroscience behind gamification is that the reward circuitry is activated. This makes a deeper emotional connection, stimulating the hippocampus to retrieve information stored away. Dopamine is released which then makes the participant feel positive emotions about the learning process. A good storyline will then boost the experience, release oxytocin which then increases trust and empathy. Gaming elements like leaderboards and badges as rewards release serotonin that makes you overall very happy! The thrill and excitement of playing the game also releases endorphins that relieve anxiety and stress. Share this link and PIN with a friend to play against and see for yourself!
